I struggle with Pride. It has been with me my entire life. I have had more successes than failures and I find it easy to pat myself on the back when hard work pays off, or when things get handed to me. But then I catch a glimpse of the cross and remember I am nothing on my own. I have been wanting to pen a simple prayer to recite to keep me in check. Now that my book is out and getting so much positive feedback, the potential for me to take the credit and expand my pride even more seems to follow me around like an annoying gnat, constantly buzzing in my ear. But I know that without Christ, I would have nothing to boast about so I must boast in Him. He is the one responsible for all of my successes.
The Holy Spirit is our Helper. He is the one I direct this prayer to and is the part of the trinity to help guard our hearts and minds. Here are some Scriptures to help you and I battle our pride together.
Philippians 3:7-11 – But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.
James 4:10 – Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
James 1:17 – Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
Psalm 20:7 – Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
2 Corinthians 10:17-18 – “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.
Philippians 2:3-8 – Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Galatians 6:14 – But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
You are not alone in the battle.

“Holy Spirit, empty me of self & fill me with your vision. Remind me that I’m not here for self-promotion but to display Your goodness. Help me find my worth in You. Nothing I have is from my own doing. Every success, everything good in me comes from You. Just as Your life is an example of service, help me to put others first. Humble my heart & remind me of these things when the world tells me the opposite is true. Be glorified in me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
