Sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things.
Let this be known throughout the earth. Isaiah 12:5
This is just one story of how God used a very frustrating situation and turned it in a way to bless others in the midst of the 2020 pandemic.
Thursday, May 7th: An email is sent to all hospital employees saying they are now responsible for their own masks starting Monday, May 11th, which are to be worn from the parking lot to the entrance. Some are to continue wearing these masks throughout the entire day; those employees with face to face contact with patients will receive one mask per day. Each employee is also expected to return the next day with that mask cleaned.
That night, on the National Day of Prayer, a God who was answering and listening millions of other prayers also heard about my frustrations about this situation. I specifically asked God to change the hearts of those in leadership at this hospital so that they would reconsider this issue and provide for this protective equipment to their employees.
I don’t normally get answers immediately, but this time I did! And God’s response was clearly… NO! But He didn’t leave it at that. He laid on my heart the idea to start a mask donation drive. Collecting donations will be a way to show these nurses and hospital staff that they are loved and appreciated by those in the community. This will have more of an impact eternally.
So, I woke my husband up and told him what had just happened. I also asked him how many employees would be impacted by this. He told me around 1800, and that is just if everyone had one mask.
Friday, May 8th: We got to work. I made a flyer and started planning for the week ahead as I knew this was an immediate need. I spoke to a sweet friend of mine who works at my home church and asked about making the front door of the church a temporary drop off point. She got the okay that night and we are moving forward full speed ahead!
This is the really cool part. There was no major publicity for this event. Everything happened entirely by word of mouth: friends told friends, who told more friends!
Monday morning came and everything was set. By the end of the day we already received 9 masks! This affirmed word had gotten out!
Tuesday… well, everyone is busy on Tuesdays…
Wednesday our total was up to 60!
On Thursday, the total jumped to 192! This day, I also reached out to a local radio station who was handing out masks to essential workers. Tomorrow was the last day for their event so I told them what was going on and simply asked that if they had any leftovers, if I could have them. They sent me a quick response and said absolutely!
Friday, May 15th came and it was the last day for our set time of donations. Last day to wake up extra early to set out the bin and pick it up with at the end of the day with my sidekick, Max (mostly so he didn’t bark when I got home and wake up the kids).
I got a call from my contact at the radio station and they said they had 30 masks left for me and would love to meet up! I hopped in the car in record time with 2 kids, met up with them and ended up receiving 40 masks!
I couldn’t wait to pick up the bin last night and count everything out. This was the biggest donation there had been all week at the church by far.
So, in just 1 week from beginning to plan all this out, God provided 345 masks. 300 of these are handmade! Do you know how many hours it takes to make 300 masks? What an incredible labor of love and sacrifice. My heart is overjoyed to get to share these with the employees in the coming days!
Thank you doesn’t seem sufficient, but truly I am so grateful to everyone who helped spread the word, prayed, sewed, and participated in so many ways to make this answer to prayer turn into 345 masks and counting!
These will be going to those who put their own health at risk day after day to keep our community going and keep us safe.
Please pray with me that everyone who receives a mask will be protected from all that threatens their health. Please also pray for them to know that they are loved by others in their community and also loved fiercely by their Creator, the provider of our needs both big and small.
Thank you again for helping in this time of need when there is so much going on. What a blessing it has been to watch all this take place in the span of a week! Our God is at work! He hears us in our times of need, He knows our hearts, and He loves providing for His children in extraordinary ways. To God be the Glory forever and ever!
Have Courage, Be Kind, & Let you Light Shine!
